Meeting Jesus - Fish for People
Luke 5:1-11
Opening Question
Share a fishing story. How long did you wait? What did it feel like to catch a fish? Who was with you?
Context
Jesus begins calling his disciples. This is not the first time Jesus has encountered Peter. In Luke 4, Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law. It’s important to note that Peter is aware of Jesus and some of what he is about and able to do.
Discussion Questions
1. What do you see, hear, smell, and feel as you read this story? Where do you put yourself in the text? Are you Peter? Or maybe one of the other fishermen in the next boat over? Part of the onlooking crowd?
2. What do we learn about God from this story? How does God work? What is God’s nature and way of being in the world?
3. We are not given the content of Jesus’ teaching while he’s in the boat, but we know he taught. We also know that the people witnessed a miracle, or act of God in the great catch of fish. What is something you have learned or seen that has moved you to believe?
4. How does the abundance of God’s provision bring hope to the people and to us?
5. What do you think Jesus means when he tells Peter that he will fish for people?
Take Home Questions
Jesus called Peter, James and John toward something greater than they knew, but still within their understanding. These men knew about fishing- what was involved, different techniques, the patience and waiting, the teamwork. Jesus also walked with them in relationship, not leaving them alone in this new call. How do you see your work or vocation in light of God’s purpose and calling?
What draws you into the day? What calls you closer to Christ? What moves you to turn from sin and walk toward a greater purpose in Christ?
