Meeting Jesus: Sermon at Nazareth – Jesus is a new thing
Luke 4:14-30
Opening Question:
Share about a vision, idea, or sermon that changed the way you look at life.
Context:
Jesus is just beginning his ministry. He is drawing attention because of his miracles and preaching in Capernaum. Now he is in his hometown of Nazareth, teaching in the synagogue. He reads from Isaiah 61 which speaks of freedom and liberty in the year of Jubilee, a time known for the forgiveness of debts.
Discussion Questions:
What do you hear in this text? What stands out to you? Imagine yourself in Nazareth, present as Jesus reads and speaks. What do you think your reaction may have been?
What kind of vision is Jesus setting up here? What will his ministry be about? How is this hope for us today?
Who is this message for? When have you seen the idea of an “in crowd” lived out in our culture and in our churches? Who is unwelcome or considered “outside” the reach of God’s grace and love?
What is difficult about a message of hope for All people rather than One special, set apart people? What steps can we take to not only widen the circle, but do away with the lines altogether?
Take Home Questions:
How are you at handling conflict? Jesus’ ministry involved a lot of conflict. This story is no different, and it seems like Jesus is provoking it. The people are amazed at him and speak well of him and then Jesus goes and says something that gets them angry. Why do you think the people got so full of rage at Jesus’ words?
How are you at listening? In this text, Jesus says, “Today this reading has been fulfilled in your hearing.” What exactly has been fulfilled? How is it fulfilled? What do you hear? Let these words sink in with all the freedom, forgiveness and hope that Jesus offers not only for you, but for everybody.
