Meeting Jesus
Luke 7:1-17
Opening Question:
What authority do you possess? Describe. (Are you someone’s boss or supervisor? Are you a parent? An older sibling? In charge of something? Considered an expert?)
Context:
Romans are usually considered enemies of the Jews, but in this story the centurion is given high praise as an honorable man who has helped the Jews. Still, as a Roman he has much power and authority. Widows, as in the second section, are often seen as vulnerable and in need of generous support, since men were the ones who held property and wealth.
Discussion Questions:
Compare and contrast the two stories in today’s Scripture verses. What differences do you notice? Who’s present? What questions are asked and what requests made? What does Jesus say and do?
What do these stories teach us about the authority of Jesus?
In the midst of a global health crisis, what do we do with these healing stories of Jesus? Every one of us knows someone in need of a miracle. How do we wrestle with the idea of miracles happening or not happening; who receives healing and who does not?
What do these stories teach us about the compassion of Jesus? What hope does this offer?
How does believing in Jesus’ power over sin, evil and death, help you live without fear?
Take Home Questions:
How might we acknowledge the authority of Christ over our lives? This is faith. What might help us trust God’s authority enough to say like the centurion, “Just say the word…”? What word from God might you need to trust today? What small step of faith can you take this week?
Jesus is ultimately about life and giving life to those near him. This is not just about eternal life for a later time, but a now, in this moment, life-giving reality. What do you need from God right now? What would be most life-giving to you? Talk to God about this need. How might God be meeting this need already before you even asked?
