MUSIC

Hello Easter Family,

My name is Kent Henriksen and I’m your contemporary music director at Easter.  Today I wanted to look back at our Jan. 17 worship and let you in on why I chose the songs I did.   Hopefully if you’re reading this you had an opportunity to worship with us.  I’ve also included links to the songs in case you didn’t.

So Will I

This was a song I loved the first time I heard it.  The arrangement, the melody, and the lyrics are all amazing.  I knew we would play it after hearing the lyric: “Every part designed in a work of art called love”.  The scripture reading for this weekend was about God’s promise being fulfilled.  After reading it I immediately heard the line “God of Your promise, You don’t speak in vain, no syllable empty or void”.   Samantha Koosmann sings this song beautifully and I love the way the Messengers surround her with sound.

Let It Shine

This is a song we started playing last year.  It’s by one of my favorite groups called “All Sons and Daughters” who sadly broke up a couple of years ago.  It’s a pretty straightforward power pop song with a great melody and message.  I really dig the way this song starts quiet and then takes off for verse 2.  This song makes me hopeful for the new year and all that it can bring.

Give Me Your Hand

This is a song we’ve done a bunch over the last few years.  It starts with a simple repetitive pattern that we keep adding layers to.   I really enjoy the unexpected melodic turns, especially at the end of the chorus.  While planning for this worship service, Pastor Megan wrote a key question for worship leaders to focus in on -“Jesus makes clear that God comes for all people. Who do we see as unwelcome today – and would rather throw Jesus off a cliff than accept?”  This song does a great job wrestling with that question.

Choosing songs to arrange and play with the Messengers is something that I’m grateful to be a part of.  I have the amazing privilege of working alongside talented and dedicated volunteers and staff every week.  They continue to inspire me and make worship at Easter a blessing to so many.  Thank you for letting us into your homes.  God Bless!  -Kent
