Gratitude for Generosity

I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. – Ephesians 1:15-16

I just had the joyful opportunity to scribble on a lot of mail. It’s the time of year where I get to sign letters confirming your Statements of Intent and the financial gifts you intend to share. I have the privilege of praying for your households, praising God for what you have shared, and celebrating the abundant generosity at work among us. My handwriting’s not great but my gratitude certainly is.

It’s always a little overwhelming to see these letters stack up, but not because of the time it takes to sign them. It simply humbles me to watch your generosity and joy at work. I get to praise God for each and every one of you and the way you put your faith in action through your giving. I give thanks for your prayers, your volunteer time and energy, and your shared talents every day, but in this season of church life, I especially thank God for your generosity.

I’ll admit that I’m looking forward to receiving more and more commitments from folks. It’s at least partly because of the fun challenges we have for our giving this year. If we receive 355 Statements of Intent, someone will get to pick all the songs we sing in an upcoming worship service, one household per style of worship. If we receive 30 first-time Statements of Intent, we will pick at least four households to get reserved seating to the Easter Sunday 2023 worship service of their choice. You’re only eligible if you submit a Statement of Intent. We’re well on our way with 256 statements, of which 26 are a first. I’m looking forward to sharing in the joy of these rewards.

And yes, I know the greatest reward of giving is simply sharing in God’s generosity. I have known that to be true in my life and I know it will be the same for you. But why can’t the joy of giving spill out into even more joy? We should get to have a little fun with it.

I will continue to rejoice. For this congregation, for the mission we share, for the way God’s love is known among us, for your many gifts, for a chance to celebrate our generosity, and for the opportunity to do ministry with you, I give thanks.

God of mercy, your abundance is at work all around us. Thank you for all who share your gifts of time, energy, talent, prayer, service, and money. It is our honor to serve you and love our neighbors with all you have given us. Make us generous and joyful, now and always. Amen.
