Nancy and her husband, Dan, are long-time members of Easter Lutheran Church. Recently, they experienced the loss of their son, Jacob, who died on September 13, 2022, at age 28. “Jacob gave his family and friends the gift of himself,” said Nancy—“always smiling, spreading God’s love and joy to everyone that knew him.” At his memorial service, the family provided time to share stories. Many talked of Jacob’s faith and seeing God through him.
Nancy and her family joined Easter Lutheran Church when seeking programs that would connect with their kids and build friendships. Rachel joined confirmation. Their son, Jacob, was just 5 years old at the time. He was born with complex health issues that required specialized care. Although Jacob’s neurological condition caused his inability to talk/eat or move without a motorized chair, his mind was sharp and he could think, learn, feel, and respond in his own special way. Jacob enjoyed worship, and Easter people welcomed and included him with love and joy.
Over the years, Jacob loved hearing stories of Jesus. When asked if he wanted to attend confirmation classes he responded with an exuberant Yes! Jacob had a deep love for Jesus and it showed, like at a Good Friday service when tears filled his face as he heard the powerful story of Jesus’ crucifixion. Nancy shared, “Jacob had a personal relationship with God that impacted my faith. I could physically see the face of God in Jacob’s face. I’m so thankful God created a home for us in heaven—such a gift and reassurance. I hear from Jacob sometimes, he touches my heart. I know Jacob is busy in heaven, and Jesus is his best friend.”
Easter Lutheran lives out its mission, “to grow in faith and carry on the work of Jesus Christ.” Jacob’s disabilities did not prevent him from being accepted and included in this faith community. Easter reinforces the lessons of God’s grace, love, and acceptance that Nancy and Dan share in their own family. “As a mom of a child with disabilities, I needed to feel like I belonged,” Nancy shared, “and Easter did that for me in many ways.... I think we all are looking to belong—right? Easter is a welcoming church, open to diversity and acceptance of others no matter their differences. This is important and makes such a difference in the lives of those who are challenged. We have found Easter to be our home.” Nancy and her husband are in a Life Group and she also participates in the Women’s Bible Study.
Easter offers many programs and ways to connect; creating opportunities to share faith and life together. Your generosity ensures all are welcome. Thank you.
