Series Theme: Finding What Is Lost

Reading: Luke 13:31-35

Connecting Question

Where is a place you feel safe?

Who is a safe person in your life?

Prayer for Illumination

God of mercy, you promised never to break your covenant with us.

In the midst of the multitude of words in our daily lives,

speak your eternal Word to us,

that we may respond to your gracious promises

with faithfulness, service and love.

Amen.

CONTEXT

It’s Lent, time for Jesus to set his face on Jerusalem and reveal who he truly is. It’s time for each of us to look toward Jesus on the cross, what does that mean in our journey, how can you live faithfully during Lent?  We want you to reflect and talk about lost things, what are you looking for your life? Use this Lenten season to let Jesus reveal himself to you, to allow yourself to be lost and found in Jesus.  Let’s take this journey together in ‘Finding What Is Lost”!

From Dr Matt Skinner at EntertheBible.org:

A series of scenes illustrates aspects of God’s reign. Jesus heals a woman’s bent back in an act of deliverance, he describes the kingdom of God as a growing seed, he calls people to enter through “the narrow door,” and he laments how Jerusalem responds to God’s agents with violence.

Look at the Book

  • How is it with your Spirit as we head to the second week of Lent?

  • Do you have any hopes for connecting with God or others this Lent?

  • Open to Luke 13. Check out the headings in your bible throughout this chapter. What do you notice?

  • The Pharisees are key to this story. Who are they? Google, if helpful.

  • What do they tell Jesus right away? Why?

  • Jesus responds with a dig at Herod. Who was Herod? Google, if helpful.

  • Jesus calls Herod a fox. A king would be referred to as a lion, so calling him a fox was not about being sly but being less. How could a comment like this get Jesus in trouble?

  • In verse 32, what does Jesus say is the content of his ministry?

  • How is Easter sharing what Jesus talks about? Do we have any blind spots?

  • How many times does Jesus talk about three things? Why? What is it pointing to?

  • In verse 34, what image is God described as? How does that image speak to you?

  • What character traits does this animal try to convey about God?

  • What would you like to talk about that we have not yet?

Taking it Home

How can you offer shelter to someone who needs it? Literally or figuratively?

God of the promise, you call your people together into your one mission in Christ’s name. Make us brave, grant us peace, challenge our expectations, and empower us to truly follow your Spirit’s lead. You are our one God who calls us together as one people, and we thank you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
