THANK YOU for your generosity!
Easter Church is proud to announce a partnership with Oak Ridge Elementary, a neighborhood school. Oak Ridge is 1.5 miles from the Hill and 1.8 miles from the Lake. Easter’s mission is to help people grow in faith and carry on the work of Jesus Christ. Walking alongside these kids is a life-giving way to grow deeply in faith while making Jesus smile.
**UPDATE: Oak Ridge staff would like to express heartfelt appreciation for our new partnership and support from Easter Lutheran Church members. As school staff learned about potential volunteers and tutors, they were inspired by this good news and broke into spontaneous applause!
At this time, over 60 Easter members have indicated an interest in volunteer work at Oak Ridge, and approximately 30 have been to the volunteer website to indicate their availability.
Training for literacy and math tutors will occur in late September and early October. Volunteers will begin working with students during the week of October 22.
Oak Ridge is a diverse, suburban elementary school that serves 635 kids in grades K through 5. Students, staff and parents focus on building community, student achievement, and high expectations for all.
Students and staff are proud of Oak Ridge’s diversity. About 45% of Oak Ridge students are from ethnically diverse backgrounds. 38% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch, which means that their families meet federal poverty guidelines. Students at Oak Ridge speak over 26 different languages (including sign language). Oak Ridge also serves a small number of homeless students.
You can be a part of the new and exciting Oak Ridge and Easter partnership! Consider volunteering one hour per week (donate just one lunch hour!) to tutor one or two children in reading or math. If one-on-one is not your thing, consider preparing materials for teachers, helping with kids during breakfast or lunch, assisting with bus duty, shelving books in the library, etc. All materials and training will be provided by Oak Ridge staff.
Teachers are in need of volunteers to support students, especially as reading and math tutors. Parents and staff have developed materials for volunteers, and they are ready to train those who are willing to help.
Volunteers are asked to commit to tutoring 45 minutes per week to work with one or two students on an ongoing basis. For example, a volunteer might tutor on Mondays from 2:45-3:30. The following times are available:
- • 9:45-10:30 AM
- • 10:30-11:00 AM (kindergarten)
- • 11:00-11:45 AM
- • 12:15-1:00 PM
- • 1:45-2:30 PM
- • 2:00-2:30 PM (kindergarten)
- • 2:45-3:30
All tutors will participate in training led by Oak Ridge staff. The training lasts about one hour, and includes: (1) a tour of the school, (2) an overview of simple and effective instructional strategies, and (3) a review of the materials that will be provided.
Volunteer service will begin in October, but anyone who is interested in tutoring is welcome to join in throughout the school year. Volunteers are also needed to re-shelve books in the library, assist in the cafeteria, and to support after school classes.
